MOT checklist: the ten-minute check that passes first time
Most MOT failures are small, visible things you can catch on the driveway the week before: bulbs, tyres, wipers, washer fluid. Run this checklist and the test becomes a formality.
Every light and indicator
Walk around with a helper (or a reflection in a window): headlights on both beams, brake lights, indicators, fog lights, number-plate bulbs. Bulbs are the single biggest failure category and the cheapest fix on this page.
Tyres: tread, pressure, damage
At least 1.6mm of tread across the centre three-quarters, no cuts, bulges or cords showing, and matching sizes across each axle. Borderline tread will not survive the tester’s gauge.
Wipers, washers, screen
Wipers that clear without smearing, washer jets that actually spray, and no chips or cracks in the driver’s sweep area big enough to obstruct view. Top the washer fluid: an empty bottle is a fail.
Horn, seatbelts, mirrors
A working horn, seatbelts that latch and retract on every seat, and the required mirrors present, secure and intact. Thirty seconds to check, all testable items.
Warning lights on the dash
Engine management, airbag, ABS or brake-fluid lights that stay lit are failures in their own right. If one is on, have it diagnosed before the test, not explained to the tester.
Listen and feel on one short drive
Knocks over bumps, grinding when braking, a pull to one side: the suspension and brake failures that dominate the serious end of the list rarely arrive silently. A week of margin turns them from a fail into an appointment.
Why cars actually fail
Year after year the same categories top the MOT failure lists: lights and signalling first, then suspension, brakes, tyres and driver visibility. Very little of that list needs a workshop to spot. The expensive failures, brakes and suspension, usually announced themselves earlier as noises, pulls or shudders that were worth an inspection anyway.
Book the MOT up to a month before expiry: pass early and you keep your renewal date, fail and you have time to fix and retest without going off the road.
Common questions
How long does an MOT take?
Around 45 minutes to an hour for the test itself. With a retest for a small fix, plan for the garage having the car half a day.
Can I drive if the MOT has expired?
Only to a pre-booked MOT appointment or to a repair. Anything else risks a fine and invalidates insurance. Book before expiry and the question never arises.
What happens if my car fails?
You get a report listing the failures and any advisories. Fix the failures and retest, often free or reduced within ten working days at the same centre. Advisories are next year’s failures: budget for them now.
Should I service the car before or after the MOT?
Booking them together in one visit is usually cheapest and catches service items that would fail the test anyway. If choosing one order: test first, then let the service fix what it found.
