Driving in Winchester, and what it means for your tyres
The M3 passes the east of Winchester between junctions 9 and 11, cutting through Twyford Down, and the A34 joins it from Newbury and Oxford. Many residents commute to Southampton, Basingstoke or London, so their cars cover plenty of fast motorway miles.
The city itself sits in the Itchen valley, so the roads out climb steeply. Romsey Road up to the hospital, St Giles Hill and the roads up to Harestock and Oliver's Battery are hard on front tyres, and the narrow, one-way centre is tight and busy.
Winchester has no Clean Air Zone charge for drivers. The lanes out towards the South Downs and the Test valley are narrow and winding, with flints and potholes that can cause punctures.
Mobile tyre fitting in Winchester
Most Winchester homes have drives or quiet roads, and the hospital, the university and the business parks at Winnall and Bar End have car parks a fitter can use with permission. Choose your spot, and the fitter brings your tyres, fits and balances them by the car and takes the old ones away.
