Driving in Lancaster, and what it means for your tyres
Traffic in the centre runs on a one-way gyratory system that loops around the city and over the Lune, and it can grind to a halt at rush hour. The Bay Gateway, opened in 2016, links the M6 at junction 34 with Morecambe and Heysham and takes some of the pressure off, but a fitting at home still saves a slow trip across town.
The M6 passes just east of the city at junctions 33 and 34, and many locals commute south to Preston or north to Kendal. Head into the Forest of Bowland on the Trough of Bowland road or north into the Lake District, and you are on steep, narrow and often wet roads.
Rain off the Irish Sea is a fact of life here, so wet grip matters most. Lancaster has no Clean Air Zone charge for drivers.
Mobile tyre fitting in Lancaster
Most Lancaster homes have drives or quiet streets, and the university at Bailrigg and the business parks around the city have car parks a fitter can use with permission. Choose your spot, and the fitter brings your tyres, fits and balances them by the car and takes the old ones away.
