Driving in Preston, and what it means for your tyres
Preston is a motorway city. The M6 runs along its eastern edge between junctions 29 and 32, the M55 heads west to Blackpool and the M61 heads south to Bolton and Manchester. A lot of Preston cars do big motorway mileages, so tread depth and tyre age are the things to watch.
Lancashire weather is famously wet, with rain blowing in off the Irish Sea, and that makes wet grip the most important quality in a tyre here. Most fitters suggest replacing at around 3mm of tread rather than waiting for the legal minimum.
Preston has no Clean Air Zone charge. Head north east up the A6 or the B6243 and you are soon in the Forest of Bowland and the Ribble Valley, where narrow country lanes, sheep and steep hills reward good tyres.
Mobile tyre fitting in Preston
Most Preston suburbs have drives or quiet roads, and the business parks at Preston East, Walton Summit and the university have car parks a fitter can use with permission. Choose your spot, and the fitter brings your tyres, fits and balances them by the car and takes the old ones away.
