Driving in Newport, and what it means for your tyres
The M4 around Newport, and the Brynglas tunnels in particular, is one of the most notorious bottlenecks in Britain. Queues build at almost every rush hour and spill onto the city's own roads whenever there is an incident. For a lot of Newport drivers, not having to drive anywhere for a tyre fitting is a real saving.
The Southern Distributor Road and the A48 carry traffic through the south of the city, and the steep streets rising from the Usk towards Allt-yr-yn and Bettws are hard on front tyres. Most residential roads in Wales now have a 20mph default limit.
Newport has no Clean Air Zone charge. The Usk is tidal with one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, and the Levels to the south are flat, low and prone to fog and standing water.
Mobile tyre fitting in Newport
Most Newport suburbs have drives or quiet roads, and the business parks along the M4 corridor and at Celtic Springs have large car parks a fitter can use with permission. Choose your spot, and the fitter brings your tyres, fits and balances them where the car sits and takes the old ones away.
