Wheel Balancing Explained: Why a Vibration Appears at One Speed

Wheel balancing fixes a vibration that arrives at a particular speed and fades above it. Here is why that happens, and why it is not the same as alignment.

A vibration appears at about seventy, it is quite noticeable, and then above eighty it seems to fade again. Nothing else about the car has changed.

That pattern is close to a signature. Wheel balancing is almost certainly what you need, and the reason it behaves that way is genuinely interesting once you know what is happening.

What being out of balance means

A wheel and tyre assembly is never perfectly uniform. Tiny variations in the rubber, the wheel casting and even the valve mean a little more mass sits on one side than the other.

At walking pace that is irrelevant. At speed the assembly is turning many times a second, and that small mass imbalance becomes a rotating force that tries to throw the wheel out of true on every revolution. Balancing corrects it by adding small counterweights to the rim until the assembly spins evenly.

Wheel balancing is a routine part of fitting a tyre. It is also something that can be lost later, which is why a car that was smooth last year is not automatically balanced today.

Why the vibration peaks and then fades

This is the part that confuses people, and it is the clearest evidence you have.

Every car has speeds at which the suspension and steering naturally resonate. When the frequency of the imbalance matches one of them, the small force is amplified and you feel it clearly. Go faster and the frequency moves past that resonance, so the vibration appears to reduce even though the imbalance is unchanged.

So a vibration that comes in over a narrow band of speeds and eases above it is characteristic of balance. A vibration that simply gets worse and worse with speed is more likely something else.

Where you feel it tells you which end

A useful narrowing that costs nothing.

  • Felt mainly through the steering wheel: usually a front wheel.
  • Felt through the seat and the floor, with a steady steering wheel: usually a rear wheel.
  • Felt only under braking, as a pulsing or juddering: not balance at all, that is the brakes.
  • A pull to one side with no vibration: alignment, not balance.
  • A vibration that changes with engine speed rather than road speed: not a wheel, that is something driven by the engine.

That last distinction is worth testing deliberately. Get to the speed where you feel it, then select neutral and let the car coast briefly where it is safe. If the vibration continues unchanged, it is road speed and therefore a wheel. If it changes, it is not.

Balancing and alignment are different jobs

They get confused constantly and they fix different problems, so it is worth being clear.

Wheel balancing corrects mass distribution around a wheel and cures vibration. Alignment corrects the angles the wheels sit at and cures pulling and uneven tyre wear. A car can be perfectly aligned and vibrate badly, or be smooth as glass while quietly destroying its inner edges.

If you are told you need both, that is not automatically an upsell: they address unrelated symptoms and both are cheap relative to a set of tyres. But you should be able to say which symptom each one is for, and a good workshop will tell you.

Why balance is lost

Nothing has to be broken for wheel balancing to be lost.

  • A weight falling off, which happens with age, corrosion, kerbing and pressure washing.
  • Uneven tyre wear, which changes how mass is distributed around the tyre.
  • Mud, snow or ice packed into the inside of the rim, which is why a vibration can appear in winter and vanish by spring.
  • A pothole that has slightly distorted the rim, in which case balancing may mask it rather than fix it.
  • A tyre that has moved slightly on the rim after a heavy impact.

The seasonal one is worth remembering before booking anything. A vibration that appeared during a cold snap and went away afterwards was probably a lump of compacted snow rather than a fault.

What a proper job looks like

The wheel comes off, goes on a machine that spins it and measures the imbalance, and weights are applied where the machine specifies.

Two things worth asking about. Whether the machine does a dynamic balance, which measures side to side as well as around the rim, since a wheel can be balanced one way and not the other. And whether the wheel was cleaned first, because mud on the inside of the rim gives a reading that is correct at that moment and wrong once it dries and falls off.

If a vibration persists after balancing, the honest next steps are checking the rim for distortion and the tyre for a construction fault, not simply adding more weight.

When to have it done

What it should cost, and what should be included

Wheel balancing is one of the cheapest jobs in the workshop, and the main thing worth knowing is when you should not be paying for it separately.

Fitting a new tyre involves taking the wheel off, breaking the bead and mounting fresh rubber, all of which changes the balance by definition. Balancing is therefore part of fitting rather than an optional extra, and a fitted price that excludes it is not really a fitted price. It is reasonable to ask what a quote includes before agreeing to it.

Where you would expect to pay separately is a single wheel rebalanced after a vibration appears, or a full set checked after a pothole. Both are modest, and both are far cheaper than the tyre they protect: an unbalanced wheel does not only vibrate, it wears the tread unevenly and puts repeated load through the suspension and steering.

  1. Whenever a tyre is fitted. It should be included rather than extra.
  2. When a vibration appears in a narrow band of speeds.
  3. After a significant pothole or kerb strike, particularly if it made a noise.
  4. If a wheel has been off for any reason and the vibration is new.
  5. Not on a schedule. Balance is not a consumable and there is no interval to keep.

That last point matters. Unlike alignment, which drifts gradually and benefits from an occasional check, balance either is or is not correct, and a car that drives smoothly does not need it looking at.
