Driving in York, and what it means for your tyres
Inside the city walls, York's footstreets are closed to most traffic for much of the day, and the gates in the walls, the Bars, squeeze what traffic there is into single lanes. Most journeys instead use the inner ring road and then the outer ring road, the A1237, which has long been one of the busiest single carriageway ring roads in the north and is being upgraded.
The Ouse and the Foss run right through the city and flood regularly, sometimes closing riverside roads and car parks for days. Driving through standing water at speed can damage tyres and hide potholes beneath the surface, so good tread and steady speeds matter more in York than in most places.
York's Clean Air Zone applies to buses rather than private cars. Out on the A64 towards Leeds and the coast, or north up the A19, long country miles make up a lot of the driving for York cars.
Mobile tyre fitting in York
Plenty of York homes have drives, especially in the suburbs outside the walls, and the business parks at Clifton Moor, Monks Cross and the university have car parks a fitter can use with permission. Choose your spot, and the fitter arrives with your tyres, fits and balances them where you are and takes the old ones away.
Workshop fitting near York
If you would rather take the car in, workshops on the network around York list their distance and their fitted price before you book. A workshop visit is the better choice for an alignment check.
