Driving in Leeds, and what it means for your tyres
The Inner Ring Road takes traffic under the city in a series of short tunnels and fast slip roads, while the M1, M62 and M621 all meet on the south side. It is a road system that rewards confidence and punishes hesitation, and the frequent braking on the approaches wears front tyres faster than the rears.
Away from the centre, Leeds is hilly in a way visitors do not expect. The back-to-back terraces of Harehills, Burley and Beeston climb steep slopes, often on setts or patched tarmac, and the cars parked on them sit with their wheels hard against the kerb. A quick look along each sidewall for scuffs and bulges is worth doing every few weeks.
Leeds considered a charging Clean Air Zone and decided it was not needed, so private cars are not charged anywhere in the city. Winters on the Pennine side can still bring ice and snow to higher suburbs like Horsforth and Cookridge, which is when good tread really earns its keep.
Mobile tyre fitting in Leeds
Plenty of Leeds homes have no driveway, so think about where the car can sit safely for half an hour. A wide side street, a work car park or a residents' parking area all work. The fitter arrives with the tyres, fits and balances them on the spot and leaves with the old ones, so the car never has to go near the ring road.
