Car Pulls to One Side? Work Through It in This Order

When a car pulls to one side the causes run cheap to expensive in a predictable order. Here is how to work through them without paying for the wrong one.

When a car pulls to one side it is annoying to live with and quietly expensive, because whatever is causing it is usually also wearing a tyre unevenly while you put up with it.

The useful thing is that the causes have a natural order, from free to check through to genuinely worth paying for. Working through them in that order stops you buying an alignment when you needed twenty seconds with a pressure gauge.

First, rule out the road

Most roads are built with a camber, a slight slope from the crown down to the edge, so water runs off. That camber will nudge any car gently towards the kerb, and it is not a fault.

Test on a flat, straight, empty stretch, and if you can, test in both directions on the same road. A genuine pull follows the car. A camber effect swaps sides when you turn around. That single check separates a real problem from normal physics, and it costs nothing.

Then check the pressures, cold

An underinflated tyre has more rolling resistance than the one opposite it, and the car drifts towards the softer side. This is the single most common cause of a pull, and the cheapest to fix.

Check all four when the tyres are cold, meaning before you have driven any distance, because driving heats the air and raises the reading. Compare against the placard in the driver's door shut rather than the number moulded on the tyre sidewall, which is a maximum rather than a recommendation.

If one is noticeably low, set them all correctly and drive for a day. A pull that disappears was a pressure problem. A tyre that goes soft again within a week has a slow puncture, which is a separate job and worth doing before it becomes a roadside one.

Then look at the tyres themselves

Tyres cause pulls in ways that pressure alone does not explain.

  • Uneven wear side to side, where one tyre has noticeably more tread than its partner, changes the rolling radius and can pull the car.
  • A mismatched pair on the same axle, different brands or patterns, can pull because the two tyres behave differently under load.
  • Conicity, a manufacturing variation in the belt structure that makes a tyre want to roll in a slight cone shape. It is rare, but it is real, and the way a fitter tests for it is to swap the two front tyres side to side and see whether the pull swaps with them.

That swap test is genuinely useful. If the pull changes direction after swapping the front tyres left to right, the cause is in a tyre. If the pull stays exactly as it was, the tyres are not the problem and you can stop replacing them.

Then alignment

If pressures are right and the swap test says the tyres are innocent, alignment is the next candidate and the most likely answer.

Alignment is the set of angles the wheels sit at relative to the car and the road. Knock those out, usually with a pothole or a kerb, and the car no longer tracks straight. The classic supporting evidence is uneven wear across the width of the tread: heavier on the inside or outside edge rather than evenly across it.

An alignment check is inexpensive relative to what it saves. A car driving misaligned can wear a tyre out in a fraction of its normal life, so the check often pays for itself once.

Worth knowing: a four-wheel alignment is not the same as a front-only one, and on many modern cars the rear axle is adjustable and does drift. If a front-only alignment did not cure it, that is often why.

Then brakes and suspension

If the pull only appears when you brake, the tyres and alignment are probably fine and the brakes are the place to look. A sticking caliper on one side applies more braking force there and drags the car towards it. That usually comes with heat from that wheel and sometimes a smell.

If the pull is there all the time and nothing above explained it, worn suspension components can be the cause: bushes, a bent component after an impact, or a failed damper. These are the expensive end of the list, which is exactly why they are the last thing to check rather than the first.

What it is costing you while you wait

It is worth understanding why this is not a symptom to live with, because the cost is not obvious until the tyres come off.

A car out of alignment scrubs rubber sideways every mile. That does not wear the tread evenly; it wears one edge, and a tyre can lose a large part of its life this way while the rest of the tread still looks fine. Because the wear is on an inner edge you rarely see, people often discover it at a service rather than noticing it themselves.

A dragging brake caliper is worse in a different way. It generates heat continuously, which cooks the pad material, can distort the disc, and burns fuel that is being turned into warmth rather than motion.

So the case for fixing a car that pulls to one side is not really comfort. It is that the fault is spending your money in the background at a rate you cannot see.

What to do with all this

In order: test both ways on a flat road, set the pressures cold, do the front-tyre swap test if you can, then book an alignment check. Mention the results of each step when you book, because a garage that knows the pull survived a pressure correction and a tyre swap can skip straight to the useful measurements.

A mild pull is not usually an emergency, but it is not something to live with either, because it is quietly costing you a tyre. Treat it as more urgent if it appeared suddenly, if it followed an impact, if it only happens under braking, or if it comes with a noise or a vibration.
