What does an auto service include?
Basic, full and major services check different things, and the right one depends on your mileage and what was done last time. Here is what each level covers and how often your car actually needs one.
Basic service
The half-year or high-mileage top-up: oil and oil filter changed, fluids topped, brakes, tires and lights checked. Right for cars covering big mileages between full services, or short-trip cars that are hard on oil.
Full service
The annual once-over: everything in the basic, plus air and cabin filters, and a deeper inspection of brakes, suspension, steering, exhaust, battery and cooling. The default choice once a year for most cars.
Major service
The full service plus the scheduled big items your owner's manual calls for at set ages: brake fluid change, spark plugs or fuel filter, coolant. Typically due every two to three years, alternating with full services.
How often should you service your car?
The working rule is every 12 months or 10,000 to 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, with a full service at least every other time. High-mileage highway cars can stretch intervals; short-trip city cars age oil and brakes faster and benefit from basic checks in between. Your owner's manual and maintenance light know your engine best: when they disagree with the rule of thumb, believe them.
A service is not the state inspection: the inspection checks the legal minimum on the day, a service keeps the car from failing it next year.
What the mechanic actually checks
Every level starts with the same spine: engine oil and filter changed, fluid levels topped, brakes measured, tires and lights inspected, and a report of anything wearing. A full service adds air filter, cabin filter and a deeper inspection of suspension, steering, exhaust and battery. A major service adds the scheduled big-ticket items: brake fluid, spark plugs or fuel filter, and coolant when the schedule calls for them.
Common questions
How long does an auto service take?
A basic service takes about an hour to ninety minutes, a full service around three hours, and a major service can take half a day if plugs and fluids are due. Most shops offer while-you-wait or same-day pickup.
Is a service the same as a state inspection?
No. An inspection is a legal pass-or-fail check of safety and emissions on the day. A service is preventive maintenance that replaces wearing parts before they fail. Booking them together saves a trip, but one never replaces the other.
Will servicing outside the dealership void my warranty?
No, as long as the schedule is followed, manufacturer-approved parts and fluids are used, and the work is documented. Independent shops do this every day; keep the itemized invoices with your service records.
What happens if the shop finds a problem?
You get told before anything extra is done. A good shop reports the problem, the urgency and the price, and you decide. Nothing beyond the booked service should ever be charged without your say-so.
