Tire pressure: the right numbers and how to check
There is no universal correct pressure: the right numbers are printed on your car, not on the tire. Here is where to find them, how to check in five minutes, and what running wrong does to grip, gas mileage and tire life.
Where the right numbers live
On the placard inside the driver’s door jamb, inside the fuel door, or in the owner’s manual, listed front and rear, often with a second set for full load. The number molded on the tire sidewall is its maximum, never your target.
How to check in five minutes
Check cold, before driving or after a couple of miles at most, because pressure rises with heat. Unscrew the valve cap, press the gauge on square, read, top up in short bursts, and recheck. Do all four and the spare, then refit the caps.
How often
Once a month and before any long or fully loaded trip. Tires lose pressure slowly all the time, and a visual glance cannot spot the difference until it is well below spec.
What running the wrong pressure actually costs
Underinflation is the expensive one: the tire flexes and overheats, the shoulders wear fast, gas mileage drops, and braking and cornering get vague. Badly underinflated tires can fail outright at speed. Overinflation wears the center strip, makes the ride harsh and shrinks the contact patch in the wet. A tire naturally loses a small amount of pressure every month, which is why monthly checks matter even with no puncture.
Loaded up for a trip? Most cars list a second, higher set of pressures for full load: use it, then drop back after.
About that pressure warning light
The TPMS light means a tire has dropped well below spec, so treat it as a check-now signal, not a suggestion. Top up to the placard figure and see whether it returns: a light that comes back within days means a slow leak that needs looking at. After any top-up or tire change, drive a few minutes so the system relearns, and reset it if your manual says so.
Common questions
Is the pressure on the tire sidewall the one I should use?
No. The sidewall figure is the maximum the tire can hold, not a recommendation. Always inflate to the automaker’s placard figure, which is set for your car’s weight and handling.
Should front and rear tires have the same pressure?
Often they differ: engines, drivetrains and load sit differently over each axle. Use the placard’s separate front and rear figures rather than averaging them.
Does temperature really change tire pressure?
Yes, roughly 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. A tire set in summer can sit meaningfully low by winter, which is why a cold snap so often lights the TPMS warning across a whole parking lot.
Can I drive with the pressure light on?
Briefly and gently, to the nearest air pump. The light means a tire is well under spec, and grip, braking and the tire itself degrade the longer it runs low. If the tire is visibly flat, stop and change or call assistance instead.

Pressure changes with temperature, which is why a reading taken on a cold morning is not the same as one taken after a motorway run. Air expands as it warms, so a tire checked hot reads higher than it truly is at rest.
That is the whole reason the advice says check cold. Cold means before driving, or at least a couple of hours after, not the temperature outside. Top up to the placard figure when cold and the pressure will rise naturally in use, which is expected and correct.
The seasonal effect catches people out every autumn. A drop of ten degrees in ambient temperature takes a meaningful amount of pressure out of a tire, which is why warning lights cluster on the first cold week of the year. Nothing has failed; the air has simply contracted, and the tires need topping up.
What the warning light does and does not tell you
A pressure warning light is useful, but it is worth knowing which kind your car has, because the two behave very differently.
A direct system uses a sensor inside each wheel and reports actual pressure, often per corner. An indirect system infers pressure from wheel speed: a softer tire has a slightly smaller rolling radius and turns marginally faster, and the car notices. Indirect systems are cheaper and have no batteries to fail, but they cannot tell you a number and they need resetting after you adjust the pressures.
Neither type catches everything. An indirect system struggles when all four tires lose pressure evenly, because it is comparing them with each other. That is exactly what happens over a cold week, which is the situation you would most want it to catch.
So the light is a backstop, not a substitute for checking. A monthly check with a gauge costs a few minutes and catches the slow, even losses that no system reports.
