Do electric cars need special tires?
Not legally, but practically the answer is closer to yes than most drivers expect. Weight, instant torque and silence change what a tire has to do. Here is what actually matters when your EV needs rubber.

The battery makes an EV significantly heavier than its gas twin, so its tires carry more load all day. That is why load index matters more on an EV, and why underinflation punishes EV tires especially hard.
Torque: instant, every time
Full torque from a standstill scrubs tread in a way engines never did. Driven gently the difference is small; driven on the fun pedal, EV tires can wear 20 to 30 percent faster. Rotation between axles matters more, not less.
Silence: the tire is the soundtrack
With no engine masking it, road roar becomes the loudest thing in the cabin. Tire noise ratings stop being a footnote, and acoustic-foam variants exist precisely for this.
What to look for on the spec sheet
Match the load index your automaker specifies, and treat it as a floor, not a suggestion: many EVs need HL (high load) or at least XL-rated tires. Prioritize low rolling resistance for range, and a quiet tread pattern because you will hear the tires in an EV. Some makers offer EV-specific lines or acoustic foam-lined variants; they are worthwhile where the maker fitted them originally, not mandatory elsewhere.
The one non-negotiable: never fit a tire below the specified load index. EV weight makes it a safety issue, not a comfort one.

Can I fit normal tires on an electric car?

Why do EV tires wear out faster?

Range is the reason most EV drivers start reading about tires, and rolling resistance is the lever. The EU label grades it A to E, and the gap between an A and a C is not marginal over a year of driving. It is the single specification worth paying attention to if range matters more to you than ultimate grip.
The trade is real, though, and worth stating plainly. Lower rolling resistance generally means a harder compound, and a harder compound usually gives up some wet braking performance. The label grades wet grip separately for exactly this reason, so read both letters rather than one.
Pressure matters as much as compound. An underinflated tire deforms more, which costs range directly, so the monthly check does more for an EV than it does for a petrol car. Use the placard figure and remember the second column, which is the loaded figure most people never look at.
Why an EV makes tire noise so obvious
In a petrol car the engine masks a great deal. Take the engine away and the tires become the loudest thing about the car at any speed above walking pace, which is why EV owners notice road noise that was always there and simply inaudible before.
The EU label grades external noise in decibels, and that figure is measured outside the car rather than inside it. It is still a useful comparison between two tires of the same size, because a tire that is quieter outside is generally quieter inside as well.
Some manufacturers line the inside of the casing with acoustic foam, which absorbs the drumming resonance that carries into the cabin. It works, it costs more, and it makes the tire harder to repair, so it is worth knowing whether your car came with it before replacing like for like.
If your EV has got noisier rather than always being noisy, that points at the tire wearing rather than the tire choice. Uneven wear patterns are the usual cause, and they are worth reading rather than living with.
One last thing specific to electric cars: regenerative braking changes where the wear happens. Slowing on the motor rather than the brakes puts more of the work through the tires and less through the pads, so an EV often needs tires sooner and brakes later than an equivalent petrol car. Budget accordingly rather than being surprised by it.
