If you have moved to an electric car and found yourself buying tyres sooner than you expected, you have not imagined it and you have not necessarily done anything wrong.
Do electric cars wear tyres faster? As a rule, yes. The gap is real but it is smaller than the internet suggests, and most of it comes from three things that are worth understanding because two of them are partly within your control.
How much faster, realistically
Reported figures vary enormously because they compare different cars driven in different ways, which is exactly why the numbers are all over the place.
The honest answer is that a like-for-like electric car typically gets through tyres somewhat faster than the petrol equivalent, and that the range of outcomes is wide. Some owners see very little difference. Others halve their tyre life. The difference between those two owners is usually driving style rather than the car.
What matters more than any headline percentage is that the extra wear is not evenly spread. It concentrates on the driven axle and on the inner shoulders, which is why the fix is largely about rotation and pressure rather than about buying harder tyres.
Reason one: weight
A battery is heavy. An electric car is commonly a few hundred kilograms heavier than the equivalent petrol model, and all of that extra mass is pressing the tread into the road.
Weight increases wear in a fairly linear way, and it also increases the load on the tyre in corners and under braking. This is the part you cannot change, and it is also why fitting the wrong tyre to an electric car is a more expensive mistake than it used to be.
Reason two: torque, delivered instantly
An electric motor produces its full pulling power from a standstill. There is no building of revs and no gap while a gearbox changes, which is what makes them pleasant to drive and what scrubs the tread.
Every firm pull away is a small amount of rubber left on the road. In a petrol car the delivery is gentler and more gradual, so the same overtake costs less tread. This is the single largest variable between two owners of the same car, and it is entirely a driving-style matter.
The same applies in reverse to braking. Regenerative braking, used well, is genuinely kind to tyres because it slows the car through the motor rather than through the friction brakes and the contact patch. Owners who lift early and let the car regenerate often see wear closer to a petrol car than owners who drive on the accelerator and then brake late.
Reason three: you cannot hear the tyres coming
This one gets overlooked. A petrol engine masks road noise, and road noise is how most people unknowingly notice a tyre going wrong.
In a quiet electric cabin you hear the tyres clearly, but you also lose the contrast that makes a developing hum or a change in note stand out. A cupped, feathered or unevenly worn tyre announces itself much earlier in a car where the tyres were always the loudest thing, so problems in an electric car tend to be found later, by which point more tread has gone.
What actually slows it down
Four things make a measurable difference, and none of them involve buying anything unusual.
- Check pressures monthly. An underinflated tyre on a heavy car wears its shoulders quickly, and electric cars are usually specified at higher pressures than you might expect.
- Rotate front to rear on schedule. Wear concentrates on the driven axle, so rotation spreads it and is the highest-value habit on this list.
- Have the alignment checked once a year, and after any significant pothole. Weight amplifies the cost of a small misalignment.
- Use the regeneration. Lifting early instead of braking late reduces both tyre wear and brake wear at once.
None of these are exotic. They are the same maintenance any car benefits from, and the extra weight simply raises the penalty for skipping them.
Do you need special electric car tyres?
You need tyres rated for the load and speed your car requires, which is not the same thing as needing a tyre marketed for electric cars.
Tyres designed for heavy quiet cars do exist, and they typically combine a stronger construction, a compound intended to last under load, and noise-reducing foam inside the casing. On a heavy car driven normally they are usually worth the money, because the cheaper tyre often does not last long enough to have been the cheaper option.
What matters more than the marketing is that the load index on the tyre meets or exceeds what the manufacturer specifies. On a heavy car this is not a detail to be flexible about, and it is the first thing to check on any quote.
When to expect the first set to go
Many owners get a surprise at the first change rather than the second, because the original tyres were chosen partly for efficiency and are often softer than what you will replace them with.
If your first set went early, that is common and does not mean the car is faulty. If your second set also goes early, and especially if the wear is uneven across the tread or worse on one side, that points at alignment or pressures rather than at the car being electric.
Uneven wear is always worth investigating. Faster wear that is even across the tread is the price of the weight and the torque. Faster wear that is concentrated in one band is a fault, and it is usually a cheap one to correct once someone has looked at it.
