The temperature gauge is climbing, or a red light has appeared, and the honest answer to what happens next depends almost entirely on the next two minutes.

A car overheating is one of the few faults where continuing to drive turns a modest repair into a new engine. So the immediate actions come first, and the diagnosis afterwards.

What to do right now

  1. Turn the air conditioning off and the cabin heater fully on, with the fan high. It feels wrong and it works: the heater matrix is a small radiator and it pulls real heat out of the engine.
  2. Pull over as soon as it is safe. Do not try to reach your destination.
  3. Switch the engine off if the gauge is in the red or a warning is showing.
  4. Open the bonnet if you safely can, to let heat escape, but do not touch anything.
  5. Wait. Thirty minutes at least before going anywhere near a cap.

If you are stuck in slow traffic and cannot pull over, the heater trick plus selecting neutral and letting the engine idle rather than labouring will often hold it for the minute you need.

The thing not to do

Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap on a hot engine. This is the single most important line on this page.

A cooling system is pressurised, and pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant. Release that pressure while it is hot and the coolant flashes to steam instantly and comes out of the opening. People are seriously scalded doing this every year, and it is entirely avoidable by waiting.

Wait until the engine is properly cool, not warm. If you need to check the level before then, look at the translucent expansion tank from the outside rather than opening anything.

Why it overheats: the common causes

An engine gets rid of heat by circulating coolant through a radiator with air passing over it. Anything that interrupts that chain ends in a car overheating, whatever the underlying part.

  • Low coolant, usually from a leak. The most common cause by a distance.
  • A failed cooling fan, which is why the classic pattern is fine on the move and overheating in traffic.
  • A stuck thermostat, which stops coolant circulating to the radiator at all.
  • A failed water pump, which stops circulation entirely and often comes with a noise or a leak at the front of the engine.
  • A blocked or damaged radiator, sometimes simply packed with leaves or debris across the front.
  • Air trapped in the system after previous work, which prevents proper circulation.

The traffic-only pattern is worth noting because it points straight at airflow. At speed the radiator gets plenty of air whether the fan works or not; standing still it depends entirely on the fan.

When it is more serious

Some symptoms point past a leak and towards the head gasket, and they are worth recognising because the response is different.

  • White sweet-smelling steam from the exhaust that does not clear as the engine warms.
  • Coolant disappearing steadily with no visible leak anywhere.
  • A thick pale emulsion on the oil filler cap or dipstick, particularly alongside the other signs.
  • Bubbling in the expansion tank with the engine running.
  • Overheating that comes back quickly after topping up.

Any of those means stop driving it. A head gasket that has begun to fail can be a repair; the same fault driven on becomes a warped head or a seized engine, and the difference between those two outcomes is often a single journey.

Topping up, once it is cool

If the level is low and the engine is genuinely cold, topping up is reasonable to get you somewhere.

Use the correct coolant specification rather than whatever is in the garage. Coolants differ chemically and mixing incompatible types can produce a sludge that blocks the system, which is a considerably more expensive problem than the one you started with. In a genuine emergency, plain water will get you a short distance, but it dilutes the antifreeze and corrosion protection and should be corrected properly afterwards.

Then find out why it was low. Coolant is a sealed system and it does not get used up. A level that has dropped has gone somewhere, and topping up without answering that question just delays the same roadside stop.

What causes it to happen at all

Most car overheating traces back to something that was visible earlier and was not acted on.

A slow coolant leak leaves a crusty white or coloured residue around hoses and joints. A temperature gauge that has crept slightly higher than its usual position over months is telling you something. A heater that has become less hot than it used to be can indicate a low level or poor circulation long before the gauge moves.

The practical habit is to glance at the expansion tank when you check the oil, and to notice where the temperature gauge normally sits so you can tell when it is not there.

Can you carry on driving?

Once it has cooled and you have topped up, a car will often run normally, and that is exactly the trap.

If the underlying cause is a leak, a fan or a thermostat, it will overheat again, and the second time may not happen somewhere convenient. If it is a head gasket, every additional mile is expensive. Neither is a reason to panic on the roadside; both are reasons to get it looked at before the next long journey rather than after it.
