When to Change Brake Fluid, and Why It Is on a Clock
Brake fluid is replaced on time rather than on wear, because it absorbs water from the air. Here is why that matters and what happens if it is skipped.

Brake fluid is the service item people are most likely to decline, because unlike pads and discs there is nothing to see and the brakes feel fine.
The reason it appears on the schedule anyway is that it is not replaced because it wears out. It is replaced because of what it absorbs, and that happens on a clock whether you drive the car or not.
Why it degrades sitting still
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it attracts and absorbs water from the air. It does this through seals, hoses and the reservoir over time, slowly and continuously.
That property is deliberate rather than a flaw. Moisture is going to get into a sealed system eventually, and it is far safer to have it dispersed through the fluid than sitting as droplets in the lowest, hottest part of the system where it would corrode components and freeze or boil unpredictably.
The cost of that design is that the fluid's performance declines steadily from the day it goes in, and mileage barely affects it. This is why the interval is expressed in years, and why a low-mileage car is not exempt.
What absorbed water actually does
Braking converts speed into heat, and a lot of that heat ends up in the fluid at the calipers.
Fresh fluid has a high boiling point, comfortably above what normal braking produces. As it absorbs moisture that boiling point falls, and water boils at a far lower temperature than brake fluid does.
If it boils, vapour forms in the lines. Fluid is effectively incompressible, which is what makes hydraulic brakes work at all, but vapour is not. The pedal then compresses the vapour instead of applying the brakes, so it goes soft or sinks towards the floor with much less braking than you asked for.
When you would notice, and why that is the problem
On a normal drive, degraded fluid feels completely fine. The temperatures involved in ordinary braking are nowhere near the reduced boiling point.
It shows up under sustained heavy braking: a long descent, a fast road, an emergency stop followed by another. In other words, it fails at exactly the moment you need it, having given no warning on any of the thousands of stops beforehand.
That is the honest argument for doing it on schedule. It is not that your brakes are currently bad. It is that the margin you are relying on has quietly shrunk and you have no way to feel it.
Corrosion, which is the slower cost
Water in the system also corrodes it from the inside, and modern braking systems contain components that do not enjoy that at all.
Calipers seize, bleed nipples shear, and the anti-lock unit is an expensive assembly with fine internal passages. Replacing fluid on schedule is considerably cheaper than any of those, and the connection between skipped fluid changes and seized calipers a few years later is a well-worn pattern rather than a scare story.
How it is tested and changed
You cannot judge it by colour alone, though very dark fluid is a reasonable prompt to look closer. Fresh fluid is usually pale and clear, and it darkens with age and contamination.
The proper test measures either boiling point directly or moisture content, and it takes a couple of minutes. It is worth asking for the reading rather than accepting a recommendation, because it converts an opinion into a number you can decide on.
Changing it means flushing old fluid through and bleeding each corner in turn until clean fluid comes out, then confirming the pedal feel. It is not a top-up: adding fresh fluid to a reservoir does nothing for the degraded fluid sitting in the lines and calipers where the heat is.
Getting the specification right
Brake fluids come in defined specifications and they are not interchangeable on a whim.
The important distinction for most owners is that conventional glycol-based fluids and silicone-based fluids must not be mixed, and that a car with anti-lock brakes usually specifies a particular grade for a reason. Using a higher-rated fluid than specified is often acceptable; using a different type is not.
Your handbook names it and the reservoir cap usually does too. It is a reasonable thing to check has been followed, and easy for a garage to confirm.

What the pedal is telling you
The brake pedal is one of the more communicative controls on a car, and the different ways it can feel wrong point in different directions.
- Soft or spongy, and it improves if you pump it: air or vapour in the system. This is the one that points at fluid.
- Firm but travelling further than it used to, gradually: often worn pads, and worth checking before assuming fluid.
- Sinking slowly towards the floor while you hold steady pressure at a junction: a master cylinder concern, and not something to leave.
- Fine cold but soft after a long descent or repeated hard stops: the classic signature of fluid that has absorbed moisture and is boiling.
- Pulsing or juddering under braking: a disc problem rather than a hydraulic one.
That fourth one is the reason a brake fluid change is on the schedule at all. It is the only fault on that list that behaves perfectly for months and then appears on the descent of a hill with a full car.
Follow the interval in your handbook, which will be a number of years, and treat it as a real deadline rather than a suggestion, because the clock runs whether the car does or not.
If your car has been standing, or has an unknown history, get the fluid tested rather than assuming. It is one of the cheapest tests available and it is measuring the thing that decides whether the pedal works on the one day it needs to.
